Day 1 we left the campground just about checkout time and headed out of town on the Glenn Highway. The weather called for rain in the anchorage area but by the time we crossed the mountains the weather had cleared and it was a lovely Alaskan Summer day ( low 70's)
The terrain was interesting as we went through mountain passes into Borreal Forests and viewing the Matanuska Glacier.

We have been surprised at the number of glaciers in Alaska and the unique look of each one. Some are huge and flow into the ocean while others are narrow and high up in the mountains, some are really dirty from the stones and gravel that they pick up as they move and shift and others are a crystal blue like a gemstone. We have seen some of each.
Our campground for the night was a typical Alaska style gravel lot but this one still had some trees for separation and the WiFi was pretty good. I should have completed this log then but I just got lazy after a nice dinner and dessert from the campground.
Day 2 was the trip from Glennallen toValdez. The Glen Highway ended here and with a right turn we were on the Richardson Highway. We made a stop shortly into the day at the Wrangell St Elais National Park Copper Center Visitors Center. It was here that we learned of a possible campground for after our stay in Valdez . . . more about that latter.
The rest of the trip included Thompson Pass with it's unusual snow markers which are used to guide snowplows in the Winter. The poles are seen in the picture towering over the van. This area can have 600-900 inches of snow a year.
As we continued down the road we found a geocache at this working phone booth.
Next were beautiful waterfalls in Keystone Canyon
Same falls as above but with me standing by the guardrail for some perspective
This was named Horsetail Falls. It has an interesting story involving a man mooning his friends as I arrived to take a picture . . . really more wildlife than I wanted to see here.
Our campground in Valdez . . .gravel lot with some of the towns bunny population wandering through.
Tomorrow is a day long boat trip into Prince William Sound.
Like the falls and the bunnies
ReplyDeleteSome brought 50 pairs of rabbits into the town because they thought the town needed something special about it and you know the rest of the story . . .they are everywhere and beloved by the town and tourists.
