Dawson City, Yukon to Tok, Alaska via the Top of the World Highway

After I posted the last blog I realized that it was still light outside so I took one more pic of the sun setting around 11:00 pm. If it had not been for the surrounding hills we would have had an even later sunset.

Up and ready for the big adventure of the day. Taking the ferry across the Yukon River and the start of the Top of the World Highway.

Leaving Dawson City behind

The road is only open from May to October and is mostly packed gravel on the Canadian side with very steep and winding curves and little to no shoulders . . . and as if that wasn't scary enough for this acrophobe, there were precious few guardrails.
I wish the pics could capture what we really saw.

We got to the border crossing and made it through in no time. The woman said we were her first Vermonters to cross.

The road on the American side was paved and beautiful . . . for the first 5 or so miles then it was equally as bad or worse what we had driven on. Adding to all of this was a major construction project in the town of Chicken, Alaska. Super rutted road by the big equipment trucks and we would find out later that we had hit and slightly damaged our exterior water tank. We did make a quick stop for a couple of pics

There were some nice views on the way south to Tetlin Junction and the Alaskan Highway. Most notable was a fire area from 2004 which burned 1.3 million acres. You could still see the effects on the landscape.

A new bridge and a great view of the Alaska Range

A quick stop for gas at prices much like home and we were off to our campground. Feeling relieved and happy to finally be in Alaska.
