A weekend in Ninilchik with a quick preview of Homer

Seward to Ninilchik is only about 135 miles so when we left the campground we decided to check out Exit Glacier which is part of Kenai Fjords National Park before heading out of  the area.
As we drove up the road to the visitor center there were signs with year numbers starting at 1815. This would be the farthest out into the land the glacier had reached since they were measuring. As we approached the glacier you could see how fast it was receding compared to earlier years. The rapid recession is due to climate change . . . .I expect it will be gone within 30-50 years. It was a pleasant and fascinating hike.

This picture shows the recession in just 12 years.
We headed toward Ninilchik with a couple of more stops along the way. Laundry once again was a priority of the day as was a quick stop at the grocery and a fill up at the gas station.  We arrived at my cousin's house around 5 and the rest of the evening and weekend were spent relaxing and chatting.
Saturday we did take a short trip to a local Russian Orthodox Church which had unique architecture and a fabulous view of  the Cook Inlet and  Mt Redoubt (a Volcano)

Mt Redoubt

We also took the 45 minute drive to Homer to visit the Bear Creek Winery. Of course I had to have some to bring home for sharing with my sisters in October during Spa Weekend. We also drove to Homer Spit but being a beautiful sunny weekend so did what seemed like the rest of Alaska and all the tourists combined. We turned around and decided to to return another day.
I am saving the family pictures until Friday when we return for some fishing and my other cousin from Palmer is down to visit.
Back to Seward and hopefully the boat tour on Tuesday.
